our history
The Humanity Initiative was founded in February 1987 by Tony Balis as an independent, non-profit enterprise. Originally incorporated as The Humanity Foundation, we have no political or religious affiliation. We are devoted purely to positive change.
Our primary work for our first ten years was our award-winning journal, humanity, composed of original non-fiction and photography. We published a preview in 1991, the first full issue in 1996 and a second issue in 1997. Since then, we have concentrated instead on expanding our presence on the World Wide Web.
Two things have given us significant momentum: the extraordinary blessing of so much time and energy from so many volunteers over twentyone years, and a recent seismic change in how well humankind pays attention to the long-term future of this planet.

To date we have been funded by our founder and a few small private donations. Now, with our web traffic increasing significantly, with many major initiatives waiting to go, and with a new leadership structure in place to complement our strong team of volunteers, we are seeking major funding from private individuals, foundations and corporate partners.
Please help. The world ever more profoundly needs a positive change in understanding and attitude.
